Swedish Krona Pressured by Global Rate Outlook Despite Solid Fundamentals, UBS Says

Summary
UBS maintains its forecast for the EUR/SEK exchange rate, arguing that rising global interest rates and expectations of further Fed tightening are neutralizing Sweden's resilient domestic economy and weighing on the krona.
The Swedish krona remains constrained by global interest rate dynamics, which are overriding the country's supportive domestic fundamentals, according to an analysis by UBS Group AG.
Global Headwinds Dominate
Strategists at UBS noted that the krona's performance is currently driven more by the international financial environment than by Sweden's own economic health. Despite a resilient economy, recovering confidence indicators, and a well-functioning monetary policy, the currency is struggling to gain traction.
Several external factors are exerting downward pressure on the krona, according to the bank:
- High energy prices.
- Sweden's relatively low interest rate level.
- Market expectations for further monetary tightening by the U.S. Federal Reserve.
UBS highlighted that the EUR/SEK exchange rate is particularly sensitive to volatility in global bond yields, preventing the krona from capitalizing on positive domestic developments.
Diverging Central Bank Paths
Sweden's central bank, the Riksbank, recently held its benchmark interest rate steady at 1.75% while signaling a more hawkish stance. However, the market reaction was muted as this policy shift was largely anticipated.
AdUBS sees limited justification for the Riksbank to raise rates further, citing controlled core inflation and some slack in the labor market. The bank expects the Riksbank to keep rates on hold for the remainder of the year. In contrast, UBS anticipates the European Central Bank may deliver another rate hike in December, creating a policy divergence that could weigh on the krona.
Forecast and Key Levels
According to UBS strategists Clémence Dumoncel and Constantin Bolz, a more favorable environment for the krona would require markets to fully price out expectations of additional Fed rate hikes, which would ease pressure on lower-yielding currencies.
The bank maintained its forecasts for the EUR/SEK pair, projecting a gradual strengthening of the krona over the next year:
- December: 11.00
- March: 10.90
- June: 10.70
- September: 10.60
UBS identified a resistance level for the currency pair near 11.50 and reiterated that key support remains at the 11.00 mark.
