Swatch Stock Slides as Strong Franc Hits H1 Profitability

Background

Shares in Swatch Group AG (UHR.SW) fell sharply on Wednesday, extending losses from the previous session after the company's first-half 2026 earnings disappointed investors. The stock dropped 3.7% to CHF 179.45 as the market reacted to significant margin pressure caused by the surging Swiss franc.

Currency Headwinds Mask Sales Growth

The negative sentiment stems from Swatch's first-half financial report, which showed operating profit falling to CHF 52 million from CHF 68 million in the same period last year. This decline occurred despite strong underlying demand.

While the company posted an impressive 8.5% increase in net sales at constant exchange rates—well ahead of analyst expectations—this momentum was largely erased by currency effects. The strength of the Swiss franc resulted in an adverse foreign exchange impact of nearly CHF 200 million, causing reported net sales to rise by only 2% to CHF 3.12 billion. Consequently, the operating margin contracted to 1.7% from 2.2% a year prior.

Analysts Trim Targets

Following the earnings release, a number of analysts revised their outlooks on the company, amplifying the selling pressure. The consensus rating remains cautious, with 10 hold and 8 sell ratings against just 2 buys.

Recent price target reductions include:

  • RBC Capital cut its target to CHF 210 from CHF 220 (Sector Perform).
  • Citi lowered its target to CHF 200 from CHF 211 (Neutral).
  • UBS trimmed its target to CHF 90 from CHF 92 (Sell).

Cautious Outlook

Swatch management struck an optimistic tone for the remainder of the year, noting that a strong sales acceleration seen in May and June had carried over into July. The company guided for a meaningful improvement in both revenue and profitability in the second half.

However, investors appear unconvinced, choosing to focus on the demonstrated sensitivity of Swatch's earnings to currency fluctuations. The stock's decline toward its session low of CHF 177.70 suggests the market is waiting for more concrete evidence of a turnaround before rewarding the company's guidance.
