Strategy Inc. Shares Fall as Bitcoin Slips and Rate Hike Fears Mount

Strategy Inc. (MSTR) shares declined nearly 3.9% in morning trading on Tuesday, pressured by a combination of a weakening Bitcoin price and a broader market shift away from risk assets following a strong U.S. labor market report.
Bitcoin and Macro Pressures
The stock's slide is closely tied to the performance of Bitcoin, which fell below the key psychological level of $80,000 on Monday. As of Tuesday morning, the cryptocurrency had not recovered, directly impacting Strategy's valuation, as its stock is widely considered a leveraged play on Bitcoin's price movements.
Broader macroeconomic headwinds are also contributing to the sell-off. The U.S. August employment report released last Friday showed the economy added 162,000 jobs, significantly higher than the 55,000 expected. This strong data has increased investor expectations for more aggressive interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve, dampening appetite for speculative assets like cryptocurrencies and related equities.
AdCorporate News Fails to Lift Shares
On the corporate front, Strategy announced that its board approved a plan to double its Digital Credit Securities Repurchase Program from $1 billion to $2 billion. However, the company specified that the buyback program is for its STRC preferred shares, not its MSTR common stock, offering no direct support for ordinary shareholders.
A modest price target increase from Canaccord on Monday, which lifted its target to $179 from $175 while maintaining a Buy rating, was unable to offset the prevailing negative sentiment. The broader market also traded lower, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq each down 0.4%, reflecting a risk-off tone across Wall Street.
