SK hynix Shares Rally on Report of Potential $12 Billion Special Dividend

Shares of SK hynix Inc. rallied on Tuesday after a report from a South Korean media outlet suggested the company is exploring a significant special dividend for shareholders. The stock gained 3.3% to reach $141.51 in morning trading, buoyed by the prospect of a substantial capital return.
Dividend Speculation Drives Gains
The primary catalyst for the stock's advance was a report from Dong-A Ilbo stating that SK hynix is considering a special dividend of approximately 16 trillion Korean won (about $12 billion). The report noted that the funds for such a payout could be sourced from the company's sale of its stake in Japanese memory chipmaker Kioxia.
In response to the speculation, SK hynix confirmed it is "studying various options to enhance shareholder returns." The company indicated that a formal announcement is expected on October 28, which coincides with the release of its third-quarter 2026 earnings results.
Analyst Confidence and AI Demand
Investor optimism was further supported by positive commentary from Rosenblatt Securities. The firm argued that a recent selloff in memory chip stocks, triggered by a competitor's technology claims, was "excessive." Rosenblatt reiterated its confidence in a structurally stronger demand outlook for DRAM, a key market for SK hynix.
AdAdding to the positive sentiment were reports that both SK hynix and Samsung are planning to upgrade their NAND fabrication plants in China. This move is reportedly aimed at meeting the surging demand for storage related to artificial intelligence applications, signaling a strong competitive position for the company in a high-growth sector.
Market Context
The rally represents a significant recovery for SK hynix stock, which had fallen approximately 30% from an early-October peak near its 52-week high of $199.87. Tuesday's move saw investors buying into the stock at more attractive levels ahead of an earnings report that analysts widely expect to be strong.
The broader market provided a supportive backdrop, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq both trading higher. Other memory sector stocks, including Micron, also gained, indicating a renewed investor appetite for the group following last week's selloff.
