Santander Brasil ADRs Plunge on Unexpected Lula Election Victory, Analyst Downgrade

American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) of Banco Santander Brasil SA (BSBR) plunged in morning trading, falling nearly 11.9% to $4.888 after an unexpected election result in Brazil triggered a broad selloff of the country's assets.
Election Surprise Roils Brazilian Markets
The primary catalyst for the selloff was the result of Brazil’s presidential runoff election on October 25, where Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured a fourth term by defeating Senator Flávio Bolsonaro with approximately 51.5% of the vote. According to Investing.com, market participants had largely anticipated a victory for the right-wing Bolsonaro, positioning for pro-business reforms and fiscal consolidation. The surprise outcome prompted an immediate repricing across Brazilian-exposed assets.
The rout was widespread within the Brazilian financial sector, with competitors Itaú Unibanco (ITUB), Banco Bradesco (BBD), and Nu Holdings (NU) also experiencing sharp declines. The selloff was compounded for U.S. investors by a steep drop in the Brazilian real, which amplified losses for dollar-denominated ADRs due to currency translation effects.
AdCompany-Specific Headwinds Add Pressure
Beyond the macroeconomic shock, company-specific factors exacerbated the decline for Santander Brasil. Jefferies issued a downgrade on the bank's stock on October 26, adding a distinct layer of selling pressure. This followed a recent decision by the bank to reduce its quarterly dividend to $0.0804 per share from a previous $0.1045, a move that had already weakened sentiment among income-focused investors.
Uncertainty is also mounting ahead of the bank's third-quarter 2026 earnings report, scheduled for October 28. Investors are now questioning the sustainability of profit momentum under a new political administration. The combination of these factors pushed the stock to an intraday 52-week low of $4.82, significantly below its 52-week high of $7.32.
