Pound Sterling Slips as Focus Shifts to Fed, Bank of England Rate Decisions

The British pound weakened against the U.S. dollar on Monday as traders positioned themselves for critical central bank announcements from the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England. The GBP/USD currency pair fell 0.06% to $1.3316 in morning trade, according to data from Investing.com.
Dollar Gains Ahead of Fed Decision
The pound's dip was primarily driven by broad-based strength in the U.S. dollar rather than UK-specific factors. Analysts at ING noted that "precautionary USD buying" is taking place ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy decision on Wednesday. While policymakers are widely expected to hold interest rates steady, the lack of explicit forward guidance from the central bank is prompting some investors to seek the dollar's relative safety.
According to Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING, this dynamic could "encourage precautionary USD buying ahead of the announcement." Money markets are currently pricing in 41 basis points of Fed rate cuts by the end of the year.
Bank of England in the Spotlight
Investors are also looking ahead to the Bank of England's (BoE) interest rate decision on Thursday. The market consensus is for the BoE to hold its key rate at 3.75% with a 7-2 vote. This expectation was reinforced by recent data showing UK inflation slowed to a 15-month low of 2.6% in June, below the central bank's own forecasts.
AdThe primary near-term risk for sterling is a potential "dovish repricing" if the BoE signals an end to its tightening cycle, according to ING. Current market pricing implies an additional 38 basis points of tightening by year-end, which could unwind if the bank's outlook softens.
Market Backdrop
The dollar's strength on Monday came despite a broader risk-on sentiment in global markets, fueled by easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a corresponding slump in oil prices. Brent crude, the international benchmark, retreated to around $92 a barrel.
In contrast to the pound, the euro held its ground against the dollar, with the EUR/USD pair rising 0.19% to $1.1390. However, analysts remain cautious on the euro's outlook, citing ongoing geopolitical risks and elevated natural gas prices in the eurozone.
