NHTSA Closes Probe into 129,000 Honda Ridgeline Rear-View Cameras

Summary
U.S. auto safety regulators have closed an investigation into rear-view camera failures in over 129,000 Honda Ridgeline trucks, concluding that a 2022 recall remedy was effective and no further action is needed.
U.S. auto safety regulators have closed an investigation into potential rear-view camera failures in 129,092 Honda Ridgeline pickup trucks without requiring further action, determining the automaker's 2022 recall was sufficient.
Investigation Details
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the closure on Tuesday, according to a Reuters report. The agency had initially opened a recall query in 2024 after receiving reports of wire-harness failures in vehicles that had already received the original recall remedy.
The review was subsequently upgraded to a more intensive engineering analysis in February 2025 to assess the durability of the repaired components. The core of the investigation was to determine if the fix for the rear-view camera wiring was adequate.
Regulator's Findings
AdNHTSA concluded its analysis after testing and vehicle inspections did not support concerns that the repaired wire harnesses were prone to failure. The agency noted that most of the complaints it received post-recall were related to other camera or wiring issues, and could not be directly linked to the durability problem under investigation.
Further work by NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center, which included owner surveys and durability testing, found no camera failures caused by wire-harness damage. The agency stated that the part was "not expected to fail during a reasonable vehicle lifespan."
Market Context
The closure of the probe is a positive development for Honda, as it averts a potential expansion of the recall or other regulatory mandates. This outcome affirms the effectiveness of the initial recall action and resolves lingering uncertainty over the issue for the affected Ridgeline models.
