Microsoft Options Signal $190 Billion Volatility on Earnings Amid AI Spending Scrutiny

Summary
Options markets indicate a potential $190 billion shift in Microsoft's market value following its upcoming earnings, reflecting heightened investor focus on the returns from its substantial investments in artificial intelligence.
Options traders are bracing for a potential $190 billion swing in Microsoft's market capitalization following its quarterly earnings report on Wednesday, a move that underscores intense investor scrutiny over the company's massive spending on artificial intelligence.
The tech giant's options are pricing in a move of approximately 6.6% in either direction post-earnings, according to a Reuters report citing market data. This elevated expectation highlights a pivotal moment for investors, who are shifting from enthusiasm for AI's potential to demanding tangible financial results.
From Enthusiasm to Execution
Investor sentiment has grown more cautious as the costs associated with building AI infrastructure continue to mount across the tech sector. The focus for Microsoft's report is whether its multi-billion dollar AI investments, particularly in its Azure cloud platform, are translating into significant enterprise adoption and revenue growth.
"The market is looking for results," said Seth Hickle, chief investment officer at Mindset Wealth Management, in a comment to Reuters. "This earnings season is about AI execution, not AI enthusiasm." This sentiment was echoed by Peter Andersen, founder of Andersen Capital Management, who noted, "Investors have seen the AI spending. Now they want to see the receipts."
A Look at the Numbers
The expected 6.6% stock move is significantly higher than the company's historical averages. Key figures from Option Research & Technology Services (ORATS) show:
Ad- The average implied move for Microsoft over the last 12 earnings cycles was 4.8%.
- The average actual stock move during that period was 4.4%.
This increased volatility pricing comes as Microsoft's shares have underperformed the broader market, falling 18.7% this year while the S&P 500 has gained 8.52%. Investors will also be watching the company's capital expenditure, which rose 49% year-over-year to $31.9 billion in its fiscal third quarter.
Bullish Bets Remain
Despite the pressure for results, some traders are still positioning for a positive outcome. According to Chris Murphy, co-head of derivatives strategy at Susquehanna, one trader spent about $10.4 million on Monday to purchase 20,000 call options, betting that Microsoft's shares will rise above $450 by August.
Murphy also noted bullish activity in the broader software sector, with investors buying 100,000 call options on the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) ahead of Microsoft's report and the Federal Reserve's policy meeting, signaling confidence in the industry's outlook.
