Intuit Downgraded by TD Cowen on Negative Outlook, AI Execution Risks

Summary

TD Cowen lowered its rating on Intuit to 'Hold' from 'Buy' and slashed its price target, citing a challenging near-term outlook, competitive pressures, and significant execution risks related to the company's AI strategy.

Background

TD Cowen has downgraded shares of financial software company Intuit (INTU) to Hold from a previous Buy rating, citing a near-term outlook that is more likely to be negative than positive. The firm also significantly reduced its price target on the stock to $304 from $504.

Analyst Cites Negative Catalyst Path

In a note to investors, TD Cowen analyst Jared Levine stated that the challenging catalyst path is expected to weigh on the stock at least until the company's third-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings report. The downgrade reflects concerns about upcoming financial reports and persistent market overhangs.

The firm anticipates several near-term headwinds for the maker of TurboTax and QuickBooks, including:

  • A difficult setup for its upcoming fourth-quarter earnings print, which is due in August.
  • Expectations that Intuit will guide its fiscal 2027 revenue below consensus estimates and its own long-term target of 10%-plus growth.
  • A lack of significant, "needle-moving" announcements expected at the company's investor day in September.

AI and Competitive Pressures

TD Cowen also highlighted ongoing risks from artificial intelligence and increased competition. While the firm does not fully subscribe to what it calls "the existential AI bear case on shares," it sees significant execution risk tied to Intuit's AI product strategy.

Furthermore, rising competition for the do-it-yourself tax market from free solutions is creating uncertainty about the long-term durability of Intuit's double-digit revenue growth. In line with this cautious view, TD Cowen lowered its fiscal 2027 and 2028 revenue estimates to 1.3% and 2.2% below Wall Street consensus, respectively. The new $304 price target is based on a valuation of 10 times calendar 2027 earnings.
