Intel Surges After Q2 Earnings Crush Estimates on AI Strength

Intel Corp. (INTC) delivered a powerful second-quarter earnings report that far exceeded Wall Street estimates, propelled by the rapid expansion of its artificial intelligence-related segments. The company's performance provided crucial validation for its turnaround strategy, sending its shares up +4.84% in after-hours trading.
AI Fuels Decisive Earnings Beat
Intel announced Q2 2026 revenue of $16.13 billion, decisively beating the consensus estimate of $14.33 billion by over 12%. Earnings per share (EPS) came in at $0.42, doubling the analyst forecast of $0.21. This marks the seventh consecutive quarter that the chipmaker has surpassed its own guidance.
The primary driver was the company's AI-focused divisions, which now account for approximately 70% of total revenue and grew over 70% year-over-year. Key highlights from the quarter include:
- Data Center & AI (DCAI): Revenue reached $6.3 billion, up 59% year-over-year and 24% sequentially.
- Gross Margin: Non-GAAP gross margin was 41.8%, beating guidance by 280 basis points, with a continued upward trajectory expected in the third quarter.
- Operating Cash Flow: The company generated a strong $7.0 billion in operating cash flow.
Turnaround Milestones and Lingering Concerns
AdBeyond the headline numbers, Intel's management confirmed critical operational progress. The company stated its 18A process node is now in volume production, with yields tracking ahead of schedule—a significant credibility boost after previous manufacturing delays. Buoyed by customer demand, Intel also raised its full-year 2026 capital expenditure forecast by $3 billion to over $20 billion.
Despite the strong results, challenges remain, particularly within the company's manufacturing arm. The Intel Foundry division posted a -$2.1 billion operating loss on revenue of $5.8 billion. While the loss narrowed by $348 million from the previous quarter, it remains a substantial drag on profitability. Reports of a potential deal with SK Hynix for its Ohio campus suggest Intel may be re-evaluating the scale of its foundry ambitions.
Market Outlook and Guidance
Looking ahead, Intel provided third-quarter revenue guidance in the range of $15.8 billion to $16.8 billion. While the midpoint of this forecast is above the current consensus of $15.07 billion, it represents a potential sequential decline from the strong second quarter. The results prompted analyst revisions, with DA Davidson raising its price target to $100 from $77 while maintaining a Neutral rating, citing valuation questions despite the clear fundamental improvements.
