Huawei Technologies announced plans to launch two new artificial intelligence semiconductors in 2027, a strategic move to bolster its AI computing business and directly challenge the market dominance of U.S.-based Nvidia. The details were revealed by rotating chairman David Wang during a company event in Shanghai.

Product and Technology Roadmap

According to Wang, Huawei intends to release the 960DT chip in the first quarter of 2027, followed by the Ascend 960PR in the third quarter. A core part of the company's strategy involves developing systems that can connect vast numbers of AI chips, enabling them to function as a single, more powerful computing unit.

Wang highlighted the company's UnifiedBus technology as a key component for its next-generation large AI systems, designed to improve information sharing and efficiency between processors. He stated that Huawei's largest linked systems, which it calls "superclusters," are being designed to support up to 1 million AI processors working in tandem.

To date, Huawei has shipped over 1,000 of its smaller linked systems, or "supernodes," to more than 370 customers, Wang said. The company did not disclose the number of chips within each supernode or name its clients.

Strategic Context and Market Implications

Huawei's push for self-sufficiency in AI hardware comes amid fierce technological competition between the United States and China. U.S. export controls have restricted Chinese companies' access to advanced foreign-made chips and manufacturing equipment, significantly increasing the importance of domestic alternatives.

By linking large quantities of domestically produced chips, Chinese tech firms can aggregate computing power to run advanced AI models, a workaround for the inability to procure the most powerful individual processors from abroad. This has positioned Huawei as a leading domestic supplier, although it faces the significant challenge of competing with Nvidia's well-established hardware and software ecosystem, which is the global industry standard. To build its own ecosystem, Wang noted that Huawei's platform now has 5,270 monthly active developers.
