Guggenheim Taps Spyre Therapeutics as Top Biotech Pick After Favorable Trial Data

Guggenheim has designated Spyre Therapeutics (SYRE) as its top pick in the biotechnology sector, citing encouraging topline results from a Phase II study of the company's experimental treatment for ulcerative colitis.
Positive Phase II Data
The positive assessment is based on 12-week data from Spyre’s SKYLINE-UC monotherapy study for SPY003, a long-acting anti-IL-23 monoclonal antibody. The treatment demonstrated efficacy consistent with existing IL-23p19 class drugs in patients with ulcerative colitis, a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Key topline results from the trial include:
- 20% clinical remission
- 30% endoscopic remission
- A 10.0-point negative change in the Robarts Histopathology Index
The company also reported a safety profile consistent with its drug class, with no drug-related serious adverse events and no patients discontinuing the study due to adverse events.
Analyst Commentary and Outlook
AdAccording to Guggenheim, a key differentiator for SPY003 is its potential durability, which could position it as a valuable component in future combination therapies. The investment firm stated it views Spyre as being "best-positioned" among companies developing longer-acting antibodies for IBD and related conditions.
The endorsement comes even as Spyre reported that a separate drug, SPY072, did not meet an internal threshold in a rheumatoid arthritis sub-study. That development prompted a downgrade to Peerperform from Wolfe Research, though firms including Baird and Stifel joined Guggenheim in reiterating positive ratings on the company.
Next Steps for Spyre
With the initial part of the Phase II trial complete, Spyre is now enrolling patients for a placebo-controlled Part B study, which will evaluate multiple monotherapy and combination therapy arms. Topline induction data from this next phase are expected in 2027.
Investors are also watching for another potential catalyst in the fourth quarter of 2026, when Spyre anticipates a data readout for its SPY072 candidate in psoriatic arthritis and axial spondyloarthritis.
