Background

Gold prices climbed on Monday, pushing back above the psychologically significant $4,000 per ounce mark as traders weighed escalating geopolitical risks in the Middle East against the outlook for U.S. monetary policy. The precious metal's move was driven by safe-haven demand, while investors assessed how sustained pressure on energy prices could affect the Federal Reserve's path on interest rates.

Price Action

According to market data from Monday evening, spot gold (XAU/USD) saw a notable increase:

  • Spot gold rose 0.4% to $4,024.72 an ounce as of 21:43 ET (01:43 GMT).
  • Gold futures for delivery gained 0.5% to trade at $4,029.87.

Other precious metals were mixed, with spot silver climbing 0.9% to $56.93 an ounce, while spot platinum slipped 0.2% to $1,594.30, Investing.com reported.

The primary driver for gold's advance was a flight to safety amid rising tensions in the Middle East. Recent developments, including new U.S. strikes on Iranian targets and threats from Yemen's Houthi movement to blockade Saudi Arabian shipping routes, have kept energy markets on edge and bolstered gold's appeal as a store of value during uncertainty.

However, reports of diplomatic efforts tempered fears of an immediate, wider conflict. Iran indicated that mediators were discussing de-escalation proposals, and Reuters reported a plan for a 10-day halt in strikes was under consideration, creating a complex picture for investors to navigate.

Fed Outlook in Focus

While geopolitical turmoil typically supports gold, the resulting rise in oil prices presents a headwind by fueling inflation concerns. This complicates the Federal Reserve's policy decisions, reinforcing expectations that the central bank may keep interest rates higher for longer to combat price pressures.

The Fed is widely expected to hold interest rates steady at its upcoming meeting, but its forward guidance will be scrutinized for any change in tone regarding inflation. Afdhal Rahman, Executive Director of Wealth Advisory at OCBC, noted that gold's rally faces a "challenging macro backdrop" from higher real yields and a stronger U.S. dollar. He added that while central bank buying provides long-term support, gold could remain under pressure until expectations for tighter monetary policy ease.
