Fitch Revises Moody's Outlook to Positive, Citing Strong Cash Flow and Diversification

Fitch Ratings has revised its outlook on Moody’s Corporation (NYSE: MCO) to Positive from Stable, signaling a potential credit rating upgrade in the medium term. The agency simultaneously affirmed Moody's Long-Term Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at 'BBB+' and its Short-Term IDR and commercial paper ratings at 'F1'.
Rationale for the Outlook Change
Fitch attributed the improved outlook to Moody's robust financial profile and dominant market position as a leading global credit rating agency. The ratings agency highlighted the company's sustained and expanding free cash flow, increased operational scale, and consistent financial policies as key strengths.
A significant factor in the decision is Moody's successful business diversification. The Moody’s Analytics division now provides substantial recurring revenue, representing more than 40% of total company revenue. This growth provides a stable, less cyclical income stream that supports the overall credit profile.
Financial Health and Projections
AdThe revision is underpinned by Moody's strong balance sheet. According to Fitch, the company ended 2025 with EBITDA leverage at a conservative 1.7x. Moody's also maintains significant liquidity, with more than $2 billion of cash, an undrawn revolving credit facility, and a $1 billion commercial paper program.
Fitch's rating assumptions project that Moody's will sustain EBITDA margins above 50% in the coming years and keep EBITDA leverage below 2.0x. This forecast holds even as the firm is expected to continue returning significant capital to shareholders via dividends and share buybacks.
Path to an Upgrade
A Positive outlook indicates a higher likelihood of a rating upgrade over the next 12 to 24 months. Fitch noted that an upgrade could be warranted if Moody's continues to grow its business while maintaining its strong profit margins and free cash flow profile. For investors, the revised outlook serves as a vote of confidence in the company's financial management and strategic direction.
