Doximity Shares Fall After Freedom Capital Downgrade to 'Hold' on Margin Concerns

Shares of Doximity Inc. (NYSE: DOCS) declined 5.6% in Tuesday's trading after Freedom Capital downgraded the digital platform for medical professionals to Hold from a previous Buy rating. The downgrade occurred despite the firm raising its price target on the stock to $27 from $24.
Analyst's Rationale
Freedom Capital analyst Gene Mannheimer attributed the rating change to a more balanced risk/reward profile following the company's first-quarter earnings report. While the report surpassed Wall Street expectations, management's updated guidance signaled pressure on profitability.
The company raised its full-year revenue outlook but lowered its forecast for EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization), citing increased costs associated with its investments in artificial intelligence. Mannheimer noted that while the AI strategy is proving viable on the revenue side, it is coming at the expense of profit margins.
Financial Outlook and Competitive Landscape
AdAccording to the analyst, the market is weighing the promising early traction of Doximity's AI search contracts against a slowdown in its core business. Key points from the company's updated guidance include:
- The midpoint of the fiscal 2027 EBITDA guidance was lowered to $319 million from a previous $329 million.
- This profit forecast reduction came even as the revenue outlook was raised by 1%.
Freedom Capital attributed the weakness in the core business to heightened competitive pressure from rivals such as Epic and OpenEvidence. The firm also maintained its view that spending from the pharmaceutical industry remains tight, though budgets may be stabilizing.
