Dollar Holds Near One-Week High as PCE Inflation Reinforces Hawkish Fed Outlook

The U.S. dollar held firm near a one-week high on Thursday, consolidating recent gains after stronger-than-anticipated inflation data reinforced market expectations for the Federal Reserve to maintain its restrictive monetary policy stance.
Inflation Data Bolsters Hawkish Fed Bets
Immediate support for the dollar came from the latest Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, the Fed's preferred measure of inflation. The headline PCE index rose 3.7% year-over-year in July, unchanged from June but slightly above Wall Street's forecast of 3.6%. On a monthly basis, the index increased by 0.2%, doubling the market consensus of 0.1%.
While the core PCE index, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, met expectations with a 3.3% annual increase, the stubbornness of the headline figure suggests that cost pressures remain embedded in the U.S. economy. This has made it difficult for markets to price in significant monetary easing.
According to futures market pricing, the probability of the Federal Reserve implementing at least one more 25-basis-point interest rate hike by the end of the year stands at approximately 60%. This outlook is providing support for U.S. Treasury yields and underpinning the dollar's strength.
Markets Await Jackson Hole Signals
AdWith the inflation data now digested, currency traders are turning their attention to the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium. Many market participants are adopting a wait-and-see approach, refraining from taking large positions ahead of the key event.
Investors will be closely scrutinizing the keynote address from the Federal Reserve Chair on Friday for any clear signals on the central bank's future policy direction. The speech will be parsed for clues on whether officials will prioritize taming persistent inflation or pivot to addressing concerns about slowing economic growth.
Other Major Currencies
Elsewhere in the foreign exchange market, several currencies reacted to domestic policy developments and economic data:
- The South Korean won (KRW) strengthened after the Bank of Korea delivered its second consecutive 25-basis-point rate hike, bringing its benchmark rate to 3.00%.
- The euro (EUR) hovered near a one-week low around $1.1600, weighed down by concerns over the continent's weak economic growth prospects, which overshadowed hawkish comments from European Central Bank officials.
- The Australian dollar (AUD) remained stable near recent highs at $0.7180, supported by strong domestic inflation figures that fueled bets on another rate increase from the Reserve Bank of Australia.
- The Japanese yen (JPY) was little changed against the dollar at 159.36, as recent comments from Bank of Japan officials kept alive expectations for a potential policy adjustment in September.
