Background

Deutsche Bank shares rallied more than 3% on Wednesday after the German lender reported its third consecutive quarterly profit record, handily beating analyst forecasts and prompting an upgraded outlook for full-year revenue.

Earnings Defy Expectations

The bank announced a third-quarter post-tax profit of €1.9 billion, with pretax profit rising 8% year-over-year to €2.6 billion, according to its report released before the Xetra open. Both figures significantly surpassed consensus estimates, which had anticipated a year-on-year decline.

Net revenues reached €8.3 billion, marking the 21st straight quarter of year-on-year growth. The bank also achieved positive operating leverage by holding noninterest expenses flat. Citing the strong performance, Chief Financial Officer Raja Akram stated on an earnings call that full-year 2026 revenues could now exceed the bank's €33 billion target.

Divisional Strength and Capital Returns

The positive results were underpinned by record-setting performance across several key business units. The bank highlighted several milestones for the quarter:

  • The Private Bank attracted record net inflows of €17 billion.
  • Asset Management saw assets under management surpass €1.2 trillion for the first time.
  • The Corporate Bank posted its own record quarterly revenue of approximately €2 billion.

Adding to investor confidence, Deutsche Bank also completed its second share buyback of 2026, bringing total capital returned to shareholders via repurchases for the year to €1.5 billion.

Market Reaction and Outlook

The stock's move to €29.81 was further supported by positive regulatory news, as the European Central Bank (ECB) communicated lower SREP capital requirements for Deutsche Bank, effective January 2027. This reduction in the required capital buffer provides the bank with greater financial flexibility.

Analysts responded swiftly, with JPMorgan reiterating its "Overweight" rating and a €41 price target, and RBC Capital Markets maintaining its "Outperform" rating with a €36 target, according to reports on October 28. The rally stood out in a mixed market, with the German DAX seeing only modest gains and U.S. indices trading cautiously ahead of a Federal Reserve interest rate decision, underscoring that the gains were driven by company-specific catalysts.
