Unilever Shares Decline as Developed Market Weakness Overshadows Sales Beat

Unilever (ULVR) shares fell approximately 2% in trading despite the company reporting third-quarter underlying sales growth that surpassed analyst expectations. Investor sentiment soured on signs of weakness in developed markets, which overshadowed the positive headline figures.
Sales Beat Driven by Emerging Markets
The consumer goods giant announced that its Q3 underlying sales grew by 5.2%, beating consensus estimates of 4.8%. This growth was composed of a 2.9% increase in volume and a 2.3% rise in pricing. Total turnover for the period reached €13.3 billion.
Performance was largely driven by strong momentum in emerging markets, particularly India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. The company's results were bolstered by its key segments:
- Home Care: Underlying sales growth of 9.1%
- Personal Care: Grew 6.3%
- Beauty & Wellbeing: Up 5.7%
AdIn contrast, the Foods division was nearly flat, posting underlying sales growth of just 0.1%. Analysts at JPMorgan noted that while the overall beat could lead to modest upgrades in consensus forecasts, the weaker trends in developed markets are likely to weigh on investor sentiment.
Updated Outlook and Headwinds
Following a strong first nine months, Unilever raised its full-year guidance for underlying volume growth to at least 3%. The company maintained its full-year underlying sales growth forecast in the 4% to 6% range and continues to expect a modest improvement in its underlying operating margin from the 20.0% reported in 2025.
However, Unilever also cautioned that currency fluctuations are expected to create a headwind, reducing full-year turnover by about 2% and the underlying operating margin by approximately 30 basis points. The stock's decline also occurred amid a broader market downturn in London and followed the recent resignation of board member Ruby Lu on October 24, 2026.
