Crypto Rebound Has 'Legs,' Needham Analyst Says, Citing Selling Exhaustion and Investor Rotation

The recent recovery in digital asset prices appears to be durable, according to a note to clients from Needham & Company on Monday. The investment bank raised its crypto volume estimates for the exchanges and platforms it covers, arguing that the rebound has fundamental support.
"How sustainable is the crypto rebound? We believe it has legs," wrote analyst John Todaro. The firm outlined three primary factors behind its optimistic assessment.
Pillars of the Recovery
Needham's analysis rests on a combination of capital flows, market positioning, and investor sentiment. The firm believes these elements create a constructive environment for digital assets going forward.
- Capital Rotation: Investor attention and capital are shifting back to crypto, the note stated. Needham observed that AI stocks, which had attracted significant retail interest, have cooled amid regulatory pressures, while trading in commodities has also eased.
- Selling Exhaustion: A significant wave of selling pressure may already be in the past. Publicly traded companies, including digital asset treasuries and bitcoin miners, offloaded a record 57,000 bitcoin, valued at approximately $4.2 billion, in the first half of 2026. Since the fourth quarter of 2025, these public firms have sold a total of roughly 69,500 bitcoin.
- Contrarian Sentiment: Needham’s proprietary “Crypto Euphoria Needham Diagram” registered a reading of 13, a level the firm classifies as “max disinterest.” This is the lowest reading since the 2022 bear market and is a level that historically signals a market bottom, according to the note. In contrast, the indicator reached euphoric territory in January 2025 during a meme coin surge that marked the previous cycle's top.
AdMarket Implications
Based on these factors, Needham has increased its volume forecasts for cryptocurrency exchanges, anticipating renewed trading activity. The firm's analysis suggests that with much of the forced selling from large entities complete, the market has a stronger foundation for a sustained recovery.
Needham did note, however, that about 70,000 bitcoin remain on the balance sheets of miners that have recently pivoted to AI, down from a peak of 100,000. This supply could still represent a potential source of future selling pressure.
