Citi Forecasts USD/JPY at 163 if Topix Stock Index Rises to 4,500

Summary

Citi analysts project the USD/JPY could climb to 163, driven by a potential rally in Japan's Topix stock index to the 4,500 level, according to a recent research note. The bank links a strong Japanese equity market to increased yen depreciation pressures.

Background

The U.S. dollar could strengthen to approximately ¥163 against the Japanese yen if Japan's Topix stock index rallies to the 4,500 mark, according to a research note from Citi released Thursday. The firm's current estimate for the currency pair, based on the Topix's prevailing level, is already around ¥160.

Equity Strength and Yen Weakness

Citi's analysis highlights the historical relationship between Japanese equities and the nation's currency. The bank notes that historically high levels for the Topix index have often led to portfolio rebalancing and hedging transactions by both domestic and international investors.

These financial flows have typically amplified the depreciation of the yen. The Topix, which tracks all domestic companies on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime Market, serves as a broad barometer for the country's equity performance.

However, Citi analysts pointed out that the direct correlation between a rising stock market and a weakening yen has become less pronounced since 2024. The note attributes this shift to several key factors:

  • The contraction in the monetary policy gap between the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan.
  • Foreign exchange interventions by Japanese authorities to purchase and support the yen.

Citi suggests the current USD/JPY exchange rate already anticipates some of the ongoing strength in Japanese equities. The bank warned that a change to the interest rate spread or a shift in Japan's intervention policy could pose risks of further yen weakness, recommending continued caution for investors monitoring the currency pair.
