Background

China suspended its exports of helium with immediate effect on Friday, a move aimed at securing domestic supplies amid rising geopolitical risks in the Middle East. The decision highlights concerns that escalating conflict could disrupt the global market for the gas, which is a critical component in manufacturing semiconductors.

Safeguarding Domestic Industry

The export halt follows renewed fighting involving Iran, which has raised fears of supply chain disruptions similar to shortages seen earlier this year. Helium is indispensable in several stages of the semiconductor fabrication process, and Beijing's restriction appears designed to insulate its own high-tech industries from potential global volatility.

This action is consistent with China's broader strategy of controlling exports of strategic materials during periods of market stress. In the past, Beijing has implemented similar curbs on commodities such as fuel, fertilizers, and sulphuric acid to prioritize domestic needs.

A Strategic Vulnerability

Despite exporting some surplus volumes to neighboring Asian markets, China is heavily dependent on foreign helium. Imported supplies account for approximately 85% of the country's total helium consumption, making its industrial sector highly vulnerable to external shocks.

Qatar, one of the world's largest helium producers, has supplied more than half of China's helium imports in recent years. Previous conflicts in the region have disrupted shipments from the Gulf nation, underscoring the fragility of the supply chain that China now seeks to mitigate.

Importance in Chipmaking

Helium, which is primarily extracted from natural gas fields, cannot be synthetically produced at an industrial scale. Its unique properties make it essential for the high-tech manufacturing sector, particularly for chipmakers.

Key applications in semiconductor production include:

  • Cooling fabrication equipment
  • Plasma etching and chemical vapor deposition
  • Supporting advanced lithography processes
  • Leak detection in controlled environments
