Catastrophe Bond Issuance Hits Record $17.6 Billion in First Half of 2026, Swiss Re Reports

Catastrophe bond issuance surged to a record $17.6 billion in the first half of 2026, fueled by robust investor demand and a relatively benign period for natural disasters. The findings were detailed in an ILS Market Insights report released Thursday by reinsurance giant Swiss Re.
Record Issuance and Market Growth
The $17.6 billion issued in the first six months of the year marks the largest half-year total on record for the insurance-linked securities (ILS) market. According to Swiss Re, this momentum was driven by strong investor appetite and a consistent flow of both new and returning sponsors seeking risk protection.
This activity has expanded the overall market significantly. Key growth figures include:
- Total outstanding notional value: Grew to $64.8 billion as of June 30, 2026.
- Previous value: Up from $59.8 billion at the end of 2025.
- Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR): 15.48% since 2021.
Favorable Conditions Attract Capital
AdInvestor demand remained strong even as risk spreads narrowed to levels last seen before Hurricane Ian. Swiss Re noted that all-in yields remained attractive when compared to expected losses and returns from traditional fixed-income investments, largely due to the support from elevated money market rates.
A relatively calm catastrophe environment also bolstered the market. Insured losses from natural catastrophes in the first half of 2026 are expected to fall below recent historical averages, with no single event causing meaningful market disruption, the report stated.
Broadening Sponsor Base and Renewal Trends
The market's growth was also characterized by a diversifying base of entities seeking coverage. Twelve new sponsors entered the market in the first half, including two sovereign governments and two ILS funds. Insurers also continued to access the market to supplement their traditional reinsurance programs.
Swiss Re also highlighted a key market trend, noting that higher issuance activity in May of this year and last year shows an increased reliance on catastrophe bonds for the critical June 1 reinsurance renewals. This suggests sponsors are actively capitalizing on favorable market conditions to secure capacity.
