Bitcoin Faces Sustained Headwinds as 10-Year Treasury Yield Approaches 5%, Wolfe Research Warns

Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market face a challenging medium-term outlook as rising interest rates create significant headwinds, according to a recent analysis from Wolfe Research. Strategists Rob Ginsberg and Read Harvey noted that the sector's downtrend remains intact, with recent rallies lacking the strength seen earlier in the year.
Macro Pressures Mount
The primary drivers behind the bearish sentiment are rising interest rates and the strength of the U.S. dollar, the strategists explained. They highlighted a historically negative correlation between Bitcoin, real interest rates, and the dollar. As the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note continues to climb toward the 5% level, this pressure on risk assets like cryptocurrencies is expected to persist.
In a research note, Ginsberg and Harvey stated they are siding with the bears, writing, "In fact, it's difficult for us to build a bullish case for the complex in the near- to medium-term." They observed that neither a broader rally in risk assets nor recent geopolitical instability and rising inflation have managed to reverse the crypto market's negative trajectory, leaving it unclear what catalyst could trigger a turnaround.
Technical Outlook for Bitcoin and Ethereum
For Bitcoin, the strategists see the "downtrend as solidly in place" despite a month of sideways trading, and they anticipate that the "next leg is still lower." They added that buyers appear to be losing interest in rebound attempts, suggesting the world's largest cryptocurrency may not even gather enough momentum to reach overbought territory.
AdEthereum is expected to follow a similar path. The Wolfe Research team projects another downward move for the second-largest cryptocurrency, with a potential retest of levels below $2,000.
Historical Cycle Context
Wolfe Research continues to monitor Bitcoin's four-year cycle, noting that the current peak-to-trough pullback has reached 53%, which is still significantly less than the historical average drawdown of approximately 80%. Based on the average timing of past cycles, Harvey suggested a potential market bottom could form around October.
Despite their bearish view on crypto prices, the strategists indicated a preference for gaining exposure through crypto-related equities over holding the tokens directly, even as these stocks have also experienced recent pullbacks.
