Background

Berkshire Hathaway shares climbed to their highest point on Monday since Warren Buffett's departure, as investors responded positively to strong second-quarter financial results and aggressive capital deployment under new Chief Executive Greg Abel.

According to a Reuters report, Class A shares rose as much as 3.3% to $806,102.81, while Class B shares gained up to 3.1% to $537.74. This marks the stocks' best performance since May 2, 2025, the day before Buffett announced he was stepping down after a 60-year tenure.

Strong Results and Cash Deployment

The rally was fueled by a quarterly report released Saturday that surpassed analyst expectations. Berkshire's second-quarter operating profit rose 16% to $12.98 billion, driven by gains in its railroad and service businesses. The company's massive cash pile saw a notable reduction, falling from a record $380.2 billion to $364.7 billion as of June 30.

Under Abel's leadership, the conglomerate significantly increased its spending:

  • $4.5 billion was used to repurchase its own stock.
  • $23.5 billion was invested in other stocks, including a new $10 billion stake in Alphabet, the parent company of Google and YouTube.
  • An additional $10.1 billion was spent in July on further buybacks and the acquisition of home builder Taylor Morrison.

Analyst Commentary

The robust performance and strategic spending prompted positive reactions from Wall Street analysts. Both Keefe, Bruyette & Woods (KBW) and UBS raised their price forecasts for Berkshire's stock following the report.

UBS analyst Brian Meredith, who rates the stock a "buy," called the cash deployment "meaningful" and a reflection of disciplined capital allocation. In contrast, KBW analyst Meyer Shields, while describing the quarter as "very solid," maintained an "underperform" rating, citing macroeconomic uncertainty and pricing pressures in the insurance sector.
