Bentley Unveils £173,000 Torcal SUV, Its First Electric Vehicle

Summary
Bentley has launched its first all-electric vehicle, the Torcal SUV, with a starting price of £173,000, aiming to attract both existing owners and new clients while navigating a cautious ultra-luxury EV market.
Bentley on Wednesday unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the Torcal SUV, a strategic move to test the appetite for battery-powered models among its wealthy clientele. The launch from the Volkswagen-owned British carmaker comes as the ultra-luxury segment cautiously navigates the transition to electrification.
A 'Bentley First' Strategy
In a direct contrast to Ferrari's first EV, which drew criticism for departing from the brand's classic design, Bentley has focused on retaining its traditional aesthetic. The Torcal SUV incorporates familiar styling cues, including diamond-shaped lights that mimic a traditional front grille, and even simulates the sound of a V8 engine using an orchestral soundtrack.
"Our intention was always to make a Bentley first," Bentley CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser told Reuters. "We feel people are not asking for a completely different car just because it’s electric." This approach targets buyers who desire zero-emission technology without sacrificing the brand's century-old identity.
Market Positioning and Demand
With a starting price of £173,000 ($230,000), the Torcal is positioned at the lower end of Bentley's range, a move Walliser described as creating a "more affordable Bentley ... that definitely opens new markets." The company is gauging interest from a mix of potential buyers:
Ad- 50% of initial interest comes from existing Bentley customers.
- The other 50% comes from consumers new to the brand.
Bentley reports strong early interest from Europe, the Middle East, and U.S. states with high EV adoption. This launch follows the company's previous decision to delay its first EV to 2026 and abandon a goal of going fully electric by 2030, citing that customers were not yet ready for the shift. Other competitors, like Lamborghini and McLaren, have also delayed or ruled out EVs due to perceived limited customer demand.
Investment in UK Production
To support the new model, Bentley has invested £350 million ($465 million) into its production plant in Crewe, England. This capital injection is a significant development for the UK's automotive sector, following recent investment announcements from McLaren and Nissan.
UK business minister Jonathan Reynolds said Bentley's investment was "proof once again that we’re creating the right conditions for good growth," according to Reuters.
