Baltic Dry Index Climbs 1.2% as Capesize Rates Surge

The Baltic Exchange's main dry bulk sea freight index advanced on Friday, concluding a week of strong gains propelled by a significant rally in rates for larger capesize vessels.
Index Performance in Detail
The overall index, a key barometer for global shipping and economic activity, gained 34 points, or 1.2%, to close at 2,944, according to data from the exchange. This daily rise contributed to a robust weekly performance, with the index finishing the week up 8.4%. The composite index tracks freight rates for capesize, panamax, and supramax vessels carrying commodities like iron ore and grain.
Capesize Segment Drives Gains
The primary driver for the week's advance was the capesize segment. The capesize index climbed 86 points, or 1.9%, to reach 4,655. For the week, the index posted a substantial gain of approximately 13.5%.
AdThis surge directly impacted vessel profitability. Average daily earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 150,000-tonne cargoes of iron ore and coal, increased by $780 to settle at $38,711. The strength in this segment was reportedly supported by a rise in iron ore futures, linked to seasonally lower Australian shipments and inventory destocking at major Chinese ports.
Panamax Rates Hold Steady
In contrast to the larger vessels, the panamax index was little changed on Friday, holding at 2,253. Despite the flat daily performance, the index still managed to secure a weekly gain of 2.3%, according to the source data.
