Asian Currencies Rise as Soft U.S. PPI Data Pares Fed Rate Hike Odds

Most Asian currencies posted modest gains on Friday while the U.S. dollar retreated, following new data that showed a moderation in U.S. inflation and dampened expectations for a near-term Federal Reserve interest rate hike.
However, gains were limited by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a sharp weekly rise in oil prices, which continued to weigh on investor sentiment.
U.S. Inflation Data Cools Fed Hike Bets
Data released Thursday revealed that U.S. producer prices were unexpectedly flat in July, providing further evidence that inflationary pressures in the world's largest economy are easing. This report followed earlier data showing that while headline consumer price inflation (CPI) rose 3.4% year-on-year in July, core CPI moderated to 2.5%.
In response to the softer inflation prints, financial markets have significantly scaled back bets on further Fed tightening. According to the CME FedWatch Tool, the probability of a rate increase at the central bank's September meeting has fallen to approximately 35%, a notable drop from 55% just a week earlier. A less aggressive Fed policy outlook typically weakens the dollar and supports risk-sensitive currencies.
Market Reaction and Headwinds
AdThe U.S. Dollar Index, which measures the greenback against a basket of major currencies, edged 0.1% lower to 99.87. In Asia, the Australian dollar saw a 0.1% gain, while the South Korean won strengthened by 0.2%. The Chinese yuan, Indian rupee, and Singapore dollar all saw minor movements against the dollar.
Despite the favorable U.S. data, currency gains were capped by external factors. Oil prices were on track for a 4% weekly jump, fueled by supply disruptions and geopolitical risk. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated Thursday that the U.S. military could sustain a naval blockade of Iranian ports, part of a strategy to maintain economic pressure on Tehran amid stalled negotiations.
Spotlight on the Japanese Yen
The Japanese yen strengthened slightly on the day, with the USD/JPY pair trading 0.1% lower at 159.34. However, the currency remains on course for a weekly loss of nearly 1% against the dollar, having given back some recent gains.
Traders remain highly alert to the possibility of further intervention by Japanese authorities to support the yen, particularly if it weakens beyond the key psychological level of 160 per dollar. While market expectations for a September rate hike by the Bank of Japan have also increased, analysts note that a firmly hawkish policy stance will be necessary to provide lasting strength to the currency.
