American Airlines Stock Slides After Slashing Full-Year Profit Outlook

American Airlines (NASDAQ: AAL) shares declined significantly in pre-market trading after the company issued a disappointing full-year profit outlook, signaling that severe cost pressures are overwhelming strong travel demand. The guidance cut overshadowed second-quarter results that otherwise surpassed analyst expectations.
Guidance Undercuts Strong Quarter
For the second quarter, American Airlines reported an adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.15, well ahead of the analyst consensus of $0.03, according to Investing.com. The carrier also achieved a record quarterly revenue of $16.7 billion.
Despite the strong top-line performance, the airline sharply revised its forecast for the full year 2026. It now expects an adjusted EPS in the range of -$0.65 to $0.65. This new guidance, which includes the possibility of an annual loss, was a significant miss compared to prior market expectations. The company's third-quarter EPS guidance also came in below forecasts.
Fuel Costs Emerge as Key Headwind
AdThe primary driver for the downgraded outlook is a dramatic increase in fuel expenses. The company reported that its fuel costs surged 83% year-over-year to reach $4.9 billion in the second quarter. This substantial rise in operating costs could not be fully offset, directly pressuring the airline's profitability and forcing the revision to its annual guidance.
Industry Context and Market Reaction
The market's negative reaction, with the stock sliding 3.3% in pre-open trading, underscores investor focus on future profitability over past performance. The fuel cost issue is a sector-wide challenge, as competitor United Airlines recently reported a similar 84% year-over-year increase in its own Q2 fuel expenses.
Analyst sentiment had also grown more cautious ahead of the report. Melius Research had previously downgraded American's stock to Hold, citing fuel volatility and capacity growth as potential threats to the airline's margins, according to the source material.
