Xylem Stock Tumbles After Q3 Miss and Sharply Lowered Full-Year Guidance

Shares of Xylem Inc. (XYL) fell sharply in pre-market trading Tuesday after the water technology company announced third-quarter results that missed Wall Street expectations and issued a substantially reduced full-year forecast. The company attributed the weak performance to project delays and more cautious customer spending.
Disappointing Results and Outlook
Xylem reported third-quarter adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $1.44, narrowly missing the analyst consensus of $1.45. The miss ended a five-quarter streak of beating earnings estimates. Revenue for the quarter was $2.20 billion, falling short of the expected $2.28 billion and representing a 3% decline year-over-year on a reported basis.
The more significant impact on investor sentiment came from the company's revised full-year 2026 guidance. Xylem lowered its outlook for:
- Full-year revenue to approximately $8.95 billion, well below the consensus estimate of $9.19 billion.
- Full-year adjusted EPS to a range of $5.40 to $5.45, down from a previous range of $5.55 to $5.70 and below the consensus of $5.65.
Management cited project timing delays and cautious spending decisions by clients as primary drivers for the shortfall, noting that its Measurement and Control Solutions segment was particularly affected, with a 16% revenue decline.
Strategic Restructuring Planned
AdAlongside its earnings report, Xylem announced a strategic reorganization intended to streamline operations. The company plans to divest its Applied Water International and Specialty Flow Control businesses. Effective January 1, 2027, it will also consolidate its current four reporting segments into three new ones: Treatment and Services, Flow Solutions, and Measurement and Analytics.
CEO Matthew Pine described the move as a strategic pivot, stating the company is "moving with urgency to shape Xylem around the markets where our capabilities can deliver the greatest customer value and strongest long-term growth."
Market Reaction and Context
In pre-open trading, Xylem shares dropped 8.2% to $99.40. The sell-off exacerbates an already negative trend for the stock, which had declined approximately 25% from its 52-week high of $154.27 before the announcement. Several investment firms, including JPMorgan, Citi, and Barclays, had already lowered their price targets on the stock in October.
A notable bright spot in the report was the company's order book. Orders grew 10% organically to $2.3 billion, resulting in a strong book-to-bill ratio of 106%. This metric suggests that some customer demand has been deferred rather than lost, potentially signaling future revenue.
