US Producer Prices Surge 6.3%, Stoking Fed Rate Hike Fears and Splitting Markets

A surprisingly strong U.S. inflation report has reignited fears of further monetary tightening by the Federal Reserve, causing a sharp divergence in financial markets. The data prompted a sell-off in technology stocks while bolstering defensive sectors, as Bitcoin held precariously near the $82,000 psychological level.
Hot Inflation Data Rattles Markets
The U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) for September rose 6.3% year-over-year and 1.3% month-over-month, with both figures coming in significantly above market expectations, according to data reported by Investing.com. This report follows other recent signs of economic resilience, including a Consumer Price Index (CPI) reading of 3.7% and a 0.8% monthly increase in retail sales, compounding concerns that inflation remains stubborn.
In response to the data, financial markets adjusted their expectations for central bank policy. The probability of the Federal Reserve implementing a 0.25% interest rate hike in October climbed to 34%, according to the CME FedWatch Tool, as traders priced in a more hawkish stance.
Stocks Diverge as Investors Rotate to Value
The reaction in the U.S. equity market on Thursday, October 15, highlighted a significant rotation away from growth assets. While the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 0.36% to 26,596.60, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 0.84% to 52,055.40, buoyed by defensive stocks. The S&P 500 remained nearly flat, closing up just 0.09%.
AdInvestors sought refuge in value-oriented names, with shares of Walmart (WMT) and Merck (MRK) climbing approximately 2%, while Nike (NKE) surged over 5%. Conversely, technology and AI-related stocks faced pressure amid concerns over debt burdens and profitability. Alex Shahidi, co-chief investment officer at MAI Capital Management Evoke, noted that high Treasury yields are forcing investors to "re-evaluate their commitment to AI-related assets."
Bitcoin Holds Firm Amid Crypto Volatility
The digital asset market displayed a mixed but volatile response. Bitcoin showed relative resilience, trading up 0.03% at $82,002.17, though analysts see this as a critical test for the cryptocurrency. The total crypto market capitalization stood at $2.75 trillion, according to data compiled by Woofun AI.
Other major cryptocurrencies were varied, with Ethereum (ETH) down 0.74% while Solana (SOL) gained 0.55%. Derivatives markets saw a surge in activity, with 24-hour trading volume jumping 28.64% to $1.47 trillion. Data over the last 30 days showed significant liquidations totaling $988.72 million, with long positions accounting for the vast majority, indicating vulnerability among leveraged traders.
Digital asset analyst Ted Pilos noted in a post on X that a daily close above $82,000 would serve as a bullish confirmation for Bitcoin. However, he cautioned that a failure to hold this level could see a retest of support near $79,700 as the market awaits further signals from Federal Reserve officials.
