Background

Wall Street equity strategists are largely maintaining their bullish outlook for the S&P 500, with year-end price targets remaining resilient despite a backdrop of rising bond yields, geopolitical tensions, and a recent tech-led market downturn. A new survey from Bloomberg found the consensus 2026 year-end forecast for the index sits at 7,967.

Forecasts Remain Steady Amid Volatility

The average target from 19 forecasters surveyed by Bloomberg slipped by just nine points from September's level of 7,976. This forecast implies a 4.5% upside from the S&P 500's closing price of 7,623.68 on October 23 and would put the index on track for a full-year gain of approximately 16%.

The resilience of these targets is notable given recent market pressures. Strategists are holding their ground even as investors grapple with several headwinds, including the 10-year Treasury yield spiking above 5%, market jitters from conflict in the Middle East, and a sharp selloff in technology stocks over concerns about AI spending.

A Tepid Earnings Season

The third-quarter earnings season has so far failed to provide a decisive positive catalyst for the market. While a majority of companies are beating profit expectations, the magnitude of these beats has been historically weak, providing only partial comfort to investors.

  • According to data from FactSet, 83% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported have surpassed EPS estimates, which is above the five-year average of 78%.
  • However, the average earnings surprise is just 2.1% above estimates, significantly below the five-year average of 7.5%. Wells Fargo characterized the start of the reporting season as one of the weakest on record in terms of surprise magnitude.

Outlook Hinges on Corporate Guidance

With backward-looking results offering a mixed picture, analysts suggest that forward-looking commentary from corporate management will be critical. "While we expect solid results, companies' ability to provide reassurance on the outlook amid macro headwinds will likely be a bigger driver of performance this quarter," Bank of America strategist Savita Subramanian said in a note.

Some strategists see the recent turbulence as a potential entry point for investors. HSBC strategist Max Kettner noted that any market dips related to recent turmoil "will likely be a good buying opportunity in the next few weeks again."
