UAE to Supply Indonesia With Up to 30 Million Barrels of Oil Amid Regional Tensions

The United Arab Emirates has agreed to supply Indonesia with up to 30 million barrels of oil, a move aimed at bolstering the Southeast Asian nation's energy security amid regional instability. The commitment was announced Tuesday by Djoko Siswanto, the head of Indonesia's upstream oil and gas regulator, SKK Migas, following a high-level meeting in Jakarta.
Details of the Agreement
The supply commitment was made after a meeting between Indonesian officials and UAE Ambassador Abdulla Salem Al Dhaheri, Siswanto said at an energy event. Under the terms of the deal, Indonesia can draw from the supply at any time, providing significant flexibility.
However, further details regarding the delivery timeline were not disclosed. According to the report, the UAE embassy in Jakarta did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the arrangement.
Securing Supply Chains
This agreement materializes as Indonesia actively seeks to diversify its energy sources. On Monday, Indonesia’s Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia confirmed he had received a directive to secure fuel from alternative suppliers due to ongoing "disruptions in the Middle East."
AdThe deal with the UAE appears to be a direct response to this instruction, highlighting the government's proactive stance on mitigating risks associated with geopolitical volatility in key energy-producing regions.
Market Implications
For Indonesia, a major net importer of crude oil, this agreement serves as a crucial buffer against potential price shocks and supply chain interruptions. Securing a flexible commitment from a major, stable producer like the UAE is a strategic move to ensure its national energy stability.
While the bilateral deal does not change global production volumes, it underscores a growing trend of energy-importing nations forging direct partnerships to manage supply risks. It also reinforces the UAE's position as a pivotal and reliable supplier in the international oil market.
