UBS Lowers Palladium Price Forecast to $1,100 on Bearish Investor Sentiment

UBS has downgraded its price forecast for palladium, projecting the precious metal will trade around $1,100 per ounce over the next 12 months. The revision reflects growing caution from financial markets, driven by weakening investor sentiment and softer import data.
Weaker Fundamentals Drive Downgrade
In a note to clients, the Swiss bank lowered its previous price predictions for December, March, and June by $100 to $200 per ounce. The downgrade was attributed to several bearish signals that suggest a more cautious outlook for the metal.
Key factors cited by UBS include:
- Weakening investor positioning and increasingly bearish sentiment in the options market.
- A significant decline in demand from a key consumer, with China’s palladium imports dropping from nearly 8.6 metric tons in April to just 3.4 metric tons in September.
AdSubstitution Economics May Offer Support
Despite the bearish outlook, UBS noted a factor that could provide some support for palladium prices. The metal’s widening discount to platinum is making it more economically viable for automakers to substitute palladium back into gasoline autocatalysts.
This shift in substitution economics could bolster automotive demand for palladium, partially offsetting the negative sentiment from financial markets. Palladium is a critical component in catalytic converters, which are used to control harmful vehicle emissions.
