Centene Boosts 2026 Profit Forecast on Strong Q3, Stable Medical Costs

Health insurer Centene on Tuesday raised its full-year profit forecast and reported third-quarter results that surpassed analyst expectations, signaling effective management of medical expenses.
Upgraded Annual Forecast
Centene now expects its 2026 adjusted profit to be more than $5.20 per share, a significant increase from its previous guidance of more than $4.80 per share. This upgraded outlook places the company's expectations well above the analyst consensus of $4.88 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG.
In a statement, Centene CEO Sarah M. London attributed the revision to a strong operational performance. "Solid underlying fundamentals within our core businesses have powered a faster recovery to our earnings trajectory than previously anticipated," she said.
Medical Costs Remain in Check
A key metric for investors, Centene's medical loss ratio (MLR), held steady in the third quarter. The MLR, which represents the percentage of premiums spent on medical care, came in at 92.7%, unchanged from the same period last year.
AdThis figure was slightly better than the 92.84% analysts had anticipated. The result suggests the insurer is successfully navigating an industry-wide trend of rising medical costs as patients seek more care that may have been deferred.
Context for Investors
The better-than-expected cost control is a positive signal for Centene and its shareholders. Health insurers have been under pressure from rising medical utilization, which can compress profit margins.
By keeping its MLR stable and below consensus estimates, Centene demonstrates a strong handle on its expenses, which underpins the company's confidence in raising its earnings forecast for the year.
