UPS Lifts Full-Year Forecast on Higher-Margin Shipment Strategy

United Parcel Service Inc. raised its annual revenue and profit forecasts on Tuesday, a sign that its strategic pivot toward more lucrative shipments is bolstering its financial outlook. The logistics giant has been actively reducing lower-margin deliveries for major clients like Amazon.com to improve profitability.
Revised Annual Outlook
The Atlanta-based company now projects full-year results to be higher than previously anticipated. According to its Tuesday announcement, UPS expects:
- Annual Revenue: Approximately $92.6 billion, an increase from its prior forecast of $91.2 billion.
- Adjusted Profit: Around $7.28 per share, up from the $7.22 per share it had forecast in July.
This revised profit guidance surpasses the analyst consensus of $7.19 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG. For the third quarter, UPS reported an adjusted profit of $1.69 per share, a slight decrease from $1.74 per share in the same period a year earlier.
A Shift to Profitability
AdThe upgraded forecast reflects the company's deliberate shift away from volume toward higher-value shipments, particularly in its international air freight business. This strategy is a core component of a broader effort to improve margins amid pressure from investors.
UPS is also implementing significant cost-saving measures, aiming to slash $3 billion in costs this year through actions like facility closures and job reductions. This dual focus on premium revenue and operational efficiency is central to its current financial plan.
Market Reaction and Industry Context
Investors reacted positively to the news, with shares of UPS climbing 1.8% in premarket trading following the announcement. Shares of rival FedEx Corp., which is pursuing a similar strategy of prioritizing margins over volume, also rose 0.6%.
The move by both logistics bellwethers highlights an industry-wide trend to enhance profitability. As a key indicator of global economic activity, UPS's performance and strategic adjustments are closely watched by investors for broader market insights.
