TSMC Boosts 2nm Chip Capacity Forecast on Surging AI Demand, Report Says

Summary
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is reportedly accelerating its 2-nanometer production, with capacity now projected to reach 120,000 wafers per month by late 2026, significantly above prior estimates, driven by strong orders from AI and HPC clients.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) is accelerating the expansion of its advanced 2-nanometer (2nm) process node capacity in response to stronger-than-expected demand from key technology clients, according to a report from Taiwanese publication EDN.
Capacity Expansion Details
The world's largest contract chipmaker is now expected to reach a monthly 2nm production capacity of approximately 120,000 wafers by the end of 2026. This figure surpasses earlier industry expectations, which had pegged capacity between 90,000 and 100,000 wafers per month, the report stated, citing industry sources.
The increased forecast is reportedly driven by a surge in orders from major customers in the artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) sectors. Clients including Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm, and MediaTek have reportedly raised their 2nm capacity orders by 10% to 20%.
Strategic Growth and Market Implications
AdThis aggressive ramp-up underscores the intense demand for next-generation semiconductors required to power advanced AI models and other computationally intensive applications. By scaling its most advanced manufacturing process ahead of schedule, TSMC aims to solidify its market leadership and meet the robust technology roadmaps of its largest customers.
To support this expansion, TSMC is bringing five 2nm fabs online this year, with two located in Hsinchu and three in Kaohsiung, according to the report which cited TSMC Senior Vice President Hou Yung-ching. This expansion is a critical indicator of the health of the high-end semiconductor market and signals strong capital investment from TSMC to maintain its technological edge.
Aggressive Long-Term Outlook
TSMC anticipates a rapid adoption rate for its 2nm technology. According to the report, Hou Yung-ching stated that the first-year wafer output for the 2nm process would be 45% higher than the first-year output of its 3nm node in 2023. Looking further ahead, TSMC reportedly projects its 2nm capacity will grow at a compound annual rate of 70% between 2026 and 2028.
