Background

Shares of digital health companies Teladoc Inc. (NYSE:TDOC) and GoodRx Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:GDRX) fell on Thursday after OpenAI unveiled a new health-focused feature for its ChatGPT platform. The move signals a potential new competitive threat in the personal health technology space, prompting a negative reaction from investors in established telehealth and health information firms.

By the close of trading, Teladoc shares had fallen 2.8%, while GoodRx shares declined 2.6%.

OpenAI Enters Personal Health Analytics

OpenAI announced that ChatGPT users in the United States can now connect their personal health data directly to the AI chatbot. The feature allows for the integration of data from Apple Health and electronic medical records from supported U.S. hospital systems, as well as from providers like One Medical and Function Health.

According to OpenAI, users can leverage this integration for several tasks, including:

  • Comparing current lab results with historical tests.
  • Summarizing changes in their health data since a previous appointment.
  • Analyzing relationships between lifestyle patterns, such as sleep and activity, and their overall health.

OpenAI stated that the feature is available to all logged-in ChatGPT users aged 18 and older in the U.S. across all subscription tiers. Paid subscribers will have access to GPT-5.6 Sol, which the company described as its most capable model for health-related tasks.

Market Implications and Competitive Landscape

The stock declines suggest investor concern that OpenAI's entry into personal health could disrupt the business models of companies like Teladoc and GoodRx. ChatGPT's ability to directly analyze a user's health data could reduce reliance on third-party platforms for health information, preliminary analysis, and other digital health services.

OpenAI noted that it developed the feature after observing that over 300 million people use ChatGPT weekly for health-related questions. The company said it worked with physicians to create evaluations for the model's accuracy, safety, and communication.

Data Privacy and Security

To address privacy concerns, OpenAI emphasized that users must grant explicit permission for ChatGPT to access any connected health information. The company stated that this data, including medical records and Apple Health information, will not be used to train its foundation models or for targeting advertisements.

OpenAI also confirmed that all conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit, with additional encryption protections specifically for health information. Users can disconnect their health data at any time, and OpenAI said the information will be deleted from its systems within 30 days.
