Sterling Slips as Traders Brace for Key US Jobs Report

Background

The British pound edged lower against the U.S. dollar on Friday, with currency markets almost entirely focused on the imminent release of the high-stakes U.S. non-farm payrolls report, a key data point for the Federal Reserve's monetary policy path.

As of 05:10 ET (09:10 GMT), the GBP/USD pair was trading down 0.11% at $1.3443. The move was part of a broader dollar advance, with sterling's weakness reflecting precautionary positioning ahead of the jobs data rather than any domestic UK developments.

Dollar Strengthens Ahead of NFP Data

The dollar's gains were attributed to several factors, including a more cautious risk sentiment and precautionary buying ahead of the payrolls release. "The dollar has regained a bit of ground into today’s release," said Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING, in a note on Friday. He cited "souring in risk sentiment" and "precautionary dollar buying into today’s data event" as primary drivers.

This market caution comes after what strategists described as ambiguous communication from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh at the July FOMC meeting, leaving traders on alert for potential surprises in economic data.

Economists at ING forecast a 70,000 increase in July payrolls, which is below the market consensus of 80,000. They also anticipate the unemployment rate ticking up to 4.3%. Such a scenario, the bank noted, "could result in a slightly softer dollar" but is unlikely to materially shift market pricing for a September rate cut.

Currency markets have shown increased sensitivity to U.S. data. Pesole noted that over the past year, the EUR/USD pair has moved an average of 0.2% in the hour following the NFP release, with the last two reports triggering larger swings of 0.4%.

Outlook Hinges on US Inflation

While the jobs report is the day's main event, many analysts believe a more definitive move in the dollar may not occur until next week's U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) data is released. A "decisive break in the dollar may have to wait" until the inflation print provides a clearer signal on the Fed's path, according to Pesole.

ING maintains a broader bearish outlook on the U.S. dollar over the coming months, anticipating that the Fed will hold interest rates steady. The bank stated that a clearer "dovish narrative" from August's full slate of economic data would be the catalyst needed to push the dollar sustainably lower and drive pairs like GBP/USD and EUR/USD out of their recent trading ranges.
