Sterling Slips Against Dollar as Mideast Risk Overshadows UK Data

The British pound lost ground against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, as escalating military tensions in the Middle East fueled a broad-based bid for the greenback. The GBP/USD pair fell approximately 0.2% to trade around 1.3410, with the dollar's safe-haven appeal overshadowing otherwise constructive economic data from the United Kingdom.
Geopolitical Tensions Fuel Dollar Demand
The U.S. dollar found widespread support as geopolitical risks intensified, pushing Brent crude oil prices to $90 a barrel. According to the source, markets are increasingly pricing in a prolonged period of elevated energy costs. Tensions rose after U.S. President Donald Trump pledged retaliation against Iran for an attack that killed three U.S. service members, while Houthi militants threatened a blockade in the Red Sea.
"Dollar risks remain skewed to the upside today as markets continue to display a risky degree of complacency towards the military re-escalation," said Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING, in a note cited by the source. With the Federal Reserve in its pre-meeting blackout period and a light U.S. economic calendar, there were few countervailing factors to the risk-off sentiment.
UK Fundamentals Muted by Domestic Politics
Sterling's decline was not driven by UK economic fundamentals, which were broadly positive. Data released Tuesday showed:
Ad- Wage growth slowed to 4.3% in the three months to May, slightly below forecasts.
- The unemployment rate held steady at 4.9%.
- Public sector net borrowing came in at £16 billion in June, below market expectations and a third lower than the previous year.
However, pressure on the pound stemmed from the UK government bond market. According to the report, 10-year gilts underperformed their European counterparts after newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham signaled an intention to use flexibility within the UK's fiscal rules. This, combined with the surprise appointment of John Healey as Chancellor, added a layer of political uncertainty for investors.
Market Outlook and Key Levels
Analysts are watching key technical and valuation levels for the pound. BofA Securities, which recently adopted a neutral near-term stance on sterling, noted that its fair-value model places GBP/USD around 1.33. This suggests the pound is only "modestly rich, by around 1-2%, rather than substantially overvalued," according to the bank.
For the pound to regain momentum, strategists suggest that stabilization in the gilt market and a de-escalation of geopolitical tensions would be necessary. In the broader currency market, ING identified 1.140 as a key near-term level for the EUR/USD pair, with a break potentially opening the door to the June low of 1.1330.
