Stellantis in Talks With Huawei, JAC for Maserati Partnership, Sources Say

Automaker Stellantis is in talks with China’s Huawei and JAC Group about a long-term industrial partnership for its struggling luxury brand, Maserati, according to two sources who spoke with Reuters. The discussions are reportedly part of a broader strategy by the global automaker to forge new alliances to bolster its brands and manufacturing footprint.
Details of the Potential Deal
According to a report first published by the Italian daily *Milano Finanza*, the talks are at an advanced stage. The potential collaboration could involve several key components:
- Technology Integration: The partnership may center on using Huawei’s Harmony Intelligent Mobility platform in future Maserati vehicles.
- Joint Production: A goal could be to begin production of the first jointly developed vehicle by the end of next year.
- Dual-Branding Strategy: The reports suggest a vehicle could be marketed under JAC’s Maextro luxury brand in China, while being sold as a Maserati in international markets.
Strategic Rationale for Maserati
AdThe move comes as Stellantis seeks to turn around the fortunes of its iconic Italian brand. Maserati has been underperforming, having shipped fewer than 8,000 cars last year and posting an adjusted operating loss of €198 million (approximately $230 million).
Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa stated earlier this year that the company was actively pursuing manufacturing partnerships, including for Maserati, as a key pillar of its long-term strategy. A successful deal could boost production rates at Maserati's plants in Cassino and Modena, Italy. The company has already announced production tie-ups with other Chinese groups, including Leapmotor and Dongfeng, as part of its €60 billion business plan through 2030.
Official Statements
A spokesperson for Stellantis stated that as part of its normal business, the company holds discussions with various industry players globally to provide customers with the best mobility choices. Huawei and JAC did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the matter. Maserati is expected to present its own long-term strategic plan in December.
