SpaceX Stock Slides as Post-IPO Lockup Expiration Unlocks 319 Million Shares

Shares of Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SPCX) fell sharply in mid-day trading, pressured by the expiration of a major post-IPO lockup agreement that allows for the potential sale of a significant number of insider-held shares. The stock slid 4.6% to $146.45 as investors reacted to the increased supply risk.
Lockup Expiration Drives Selling
The primary catalyst for the decline was the arrival of the company's third post-IPO lockup expiration, which occurred 90 days after its June 2026 public offering. This event made up to 319 million additional shares held by insiders eligible for sale on the open market.
The prospect of a sudden surge in the supply of freely tradable shares created significant selling pressure. Investors appeared to be pricing in the risk that early stakeholders might liquidate a portion of their holdings, a common occurrence following lockup expirations.
Analyst Actions and Market Headwinds
Adding to the cautious sentiment, a Wells Fargo analyst trimmed his price target on the stock just one day before the lockup expiry. In a note to clients, analyst Ken Gawrelski reduced his 12-month target to $212 from $215, while maintaining an Overweight rating. The note cited SpaceX's plans to enter the U.S. wireless market.
AdThis modest revision was partially offset by a new Buy rating from Pivotal Research, which initiated coverage with a $220 price target based on the potential of its reusable Starship vehicle. However, this bullish outlook was not enough to overcome the lockup-related selling pressure.
A broader market downturn amplified the stock's decline. The S&P 500 fell 0.5% and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.8%, reflecting a mild risk-off tone across U.S. equities that compounded the stock-specific headwinds.
Context and a Look Ahead
Despite the day's losses, a potentially significant catalyst for the stock is on the horizon. According to estimates from Morgan Stanley, an upcoming quarterly rebalancing of the Nasdaq-100 index could trigger approximately $15.5 billion in passive net buying of SPCX shares.
Results of the rebalancing are expected later this week and would become effective on September 21. For now, however, the market remains focused on the immediate supply overhang from the unlocked shares, which continues to act as a drag on investor sentiment.
