S&P Revises Hitachi's Outlook to Positive on Strategic Focus and Financial Strength

S&P Global Ratings has revised its outlook on Hitachi Ltd. (TSE:6501) to positive from stable, signaling a potential future upgrade for the Japanese industrial conglomerate. The rating agency affirmed Hitachi's 'A' long-term and 'A-1' short-term issuer credit ratings, citing growing confidence in the company's strategic transformation and financial discipline.
Key Drivers of the Revision
The positive outlook reflects S&P's view that Hitachi's competitiveness is strengthening as it reshapes its business portfolio. The agency highlighted the company's strategy of focusing management resources on high-growth areas like social infrastructure and IT services, where it sees structural demand.
Key strategic moves noted by S&P include:
- Divesting non-core assets, such as its automotive parts and construction machinery businesses.
- Combining its product lines with IT and control technologies to create higher-value services.
- Integrating a signaling business acquired in 2024 to bolster its rail division.
- Utilizing AI across its businesses to drive revenue growth and enhance competitiveness.
Financial Outlook and Metrics
AdS&P expects Hitachi to maintain strong financial ratios even as it increases investments and shareholder returns. The rating agency forecasts the company's EBITDA margin will improve to the mid or upper 16% range over the next one to two years, up from 15.6% in the fiscal year that ended March 31, 2026.
This improved profitability, along with disciplined financial management, is expected to keep the company's debt-to-EBITDA ratio at approximately 1.0x. The agency also noted that Hitachi achieved a net cash position in fiscal 2025, supported by expanded earnings, asset sales, and significant customer advances.
Path to an Upgrade
A formal credit rating upgrade could be considered if Hitachi demonstrates sustained performance improvements. S&P stated it may raise Hitachi's rating if its EBITDA margin remains sustainably above 16% and its debt-to-EBITDA ratio stays below 1.5x, all while maintaining its disciplined financial policies.
