SAP Shares Surge on Accelerated Cloud Backlog Growth

Shares in SAP (SAPG) surged on Friday after the German enterprise software company reported a significant acceleration in its cloud business, easing investor concerns about a potential slowdown in demand. The stock climbed 6.0% to €135.98 in European trading, rebounding sharply from a 52-week low set just a day earlier.
Cloud Backlog Exceeds Forecasts
The primary catalyst for the rally was the company's current cloud backlog, a key metric that reflects signed contracts for future cloud revenue. In its Q2 2026 results, released Thursday evening, SAP revealed this figure grew 27% year-over-year to €22.9 billion.
This growth rate represents an acceleration from the 25% pace recorded in the first quarter and surpassed analyst expectations. According to a note from Jefferies analyst Charles Brennan cited by Investing.com, the backlog beat was a clear indication of "robust order momentum" and was sufficient on its own to drive a recovery in the stock.
Revised Outlook and Market Reversal
While the cloud results were strong, SAP modestly trimmed its full-year non-IFRS operating profit outlook to a range of €11.8–12.2 billion, down from a previous forecast of €11.9–12.3 billion. The company attributed this adjustment to dilution from its recent acquisitions of Dremio and Prior Labs, not a change in operational performance.
AdCrucially for investors, SAP reaffirmed its full-year cloud revenue guidance of €25.8–26.2 billion. The positive cloud data and reaffirmed revenue outlook triggered a significant sentiment reversal, especially as the stock had fallen to €127.50 on July 23, its lowest point since November 2023.
Performance in a Muted Market
SAP's gains stood out against a subdued broader market, underscoring the company-specific nature of the news. The pan-European STOXX 600 index was trading flat, while U.S. markets opened with a similarly cautious tone.
As a heavyweight component of Germany's DAX index, SAP's strong performance provided a significant pillar of support for the benchmark. The combination of a deeply oversold stock and a key fundamental beat provided the fuel for one of the company's sharpest single-day rallies in recent months.
