Background

World Foundation, the non-profit organization stewarding the World Network digital identity project co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has raised $52.5 million in an initial funding round structured as a one-year locked token sale to strategic investors.

Funding Details

The fundraising was led by Pantera Capital, with participation from other notable firms including Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, and Susquehanna Crypto, according to the foundation. The WLD tokens sold to these investors are subject to a 12-month lockup period, signaling a long-term commitment from the participants.

World Foundation stated the new capital will be used to scale its World ID technology for organizations, consumers, and AI agents globally. The project, which rebranded from Worldcoin in 2024, aims to provide a verifiable "digital passport" to distinguish humans from AI bots online.

The 'Proof of Human' Thesis

Investors see a growing need for the project's core offering as artificial intelligence becomes more sophisticated and widespread. "The need for Proof of Human is becoming acutely clear with the acceleration of AI development, and we see this in the influx of enterprise traction," said Cosmo Jiang, General Partner at Pantera Capital.

World Foundation argues that without such verification, key digital infrastructure could be compromised. The project cited potential risks to advertising models reliant on human engagement, the proliferation of synthetic profiles on social platforms, and the integrity of online voting systems.

Background and Adoption

World Network uses a unique, bowling-ball-sized device called an "Orb" to scan a person's iris in exchange for a digital ID and its WLD cryptocurrency. Despite its ambitious goals, the project has faced scrutiny and temporary bans in some countries over privacy concerns related to its biometric data collection methods.

To date, the project reports significant user adoption:

  • Over 39 million people have joined the World Network.
  • More than 18 million individuals have been verified by an Orb.
  • The network has processed over 475 million World ID proofs since its inception.
