Railroads Post Strong Q2 Earnings as Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern Merger Looms

Major North American railroads reported second-quarter 2026 financial results that broadly exceeded analyst expectations, driven by what some analysts call a new upcycle in the freight sector. While the strong operational performance was notable, the dominant theme for investors is a potential industry-altering merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern.
A Quarter of Earnings Beats
All four major carriers that have reported so far surpassed consensus estimates for both earnings per share (EPS) and revenue. Norfolk Southern delivered the largest EPS surprise of the group, beating forecasts by nearly 9%.
Key Q2 2026 earnings results, as reported by Investing.com, include:
- Norfolk Southern (NSC): Posted an +8.98% EPS surprise and a +6.1% revenue surprise. The company also raised its guidance.
- Canadian National (CNI): Reported a +7.77% EPS surprise and a +4.2% revenue surprise, leading to raised guidance.
- Union Pacific (UNP): Beat EPS estimates by +6.90% and revenue forecasts by +3.8%.
- CSX Corporation (CSX): Topped EPS expectations by +5.88% and revenue by +2.6%, issuing a significant guidance increase.
Proposed Merger Reshapes Outlook
AdThe most significant development impacting the sector is the proposed merger between Union Pacific (UNP) and Norfolk Southern (NSC). The deal's prospects appeared to improve after Canadian National (CNI) reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding to drop its opposition in exchange for certain competitive access rights, potentially easing the regulatory review process.
Following these developments, analysts have been reassessing Norfolk Southern's valuation. Evercore ISI, for instance, raised its price target on NSC stock to $358 and increased its full-year 2026 EPS estimate to $13.26, according to the report.
CSX Shines on Operations
From a purely operational standpoint, CSX Corporation (CSX) delivered a standout quarter. The company reported record Q2 revenue of $3.94 billion, a 240-basis-point year-over-year expansion in its operating margin to 38.3%, and a dramatic increase in first-half free cash flow to $1.617 billion from $444 million in the prior year.
CSX raised its full-year 2026 guidance, now projecting mid-to-high single-digit revenue growth and over 80% growth in free cash flow. The final report of the season will come from Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CP), which is scheduled to release its results on July 29. The company has missed EPS estimates in its last four quarters, setting up a potentially significant report amid the broader sector strength.
