Pound Sterling Weakens as Hawkish Fed Outlook Lifts US Dollar

The British pound edged lower against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday, pressured by a broad strengthening of the greenback as markets digested an increasingly hawkish outlook from the U.S. Federal Reserve.
As of 3:52 AM ET, the GBP/USD pair was down 0.04% to 1.3509, while the EUR/USD pair saw a more pronounced decline of 0.13% to 1.1577, according to Investing.com data.
Dollar Gains on Fed Tightening Narrative
The dollar's ascent is primarily driven by a market repricing of the Fed's policy trajectory. According to a note from ING, recent hawkish commentary from Fed officials has led traders to anticipate a more aggressive tightening cycle, with a potential interest rate hike in September now being factored in. This shift comes amid concerns that inflation is not cooling fast enough while the broader economy remains robust.
"We think the Fed cyclical tightening story is strong enough to overwhelm the secular U.S. dollar debasement story," wrote Chris Turner, Global Head of Markets at ING. Turner added that ING favors the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) "grinding its way to the 100.10/20 area."
Broad Impact on Currencies
The pound's decline on Wednesday was attributed almost entirely to the dollar's strength, rather than any new developments in the UK's domestic political or economic landscape. The euro also faced significant headwinds, pressured by both the hawkish Fed stance and the impact of rising energy prices on the Eurozone economy.
AdING analysts noted that the euro faces mounting resistance and could see its losses extend toward the 1.1520 level if it breaks below the key 1.1565/70 support area. The firm also highlighted that while markets have priced in approximately 80 basis points of European Central Bank rate hikes by next summer, ING's team views this scenario as "highly unlikely."
What to Watch Next
Investors are now turning their attention to a series of upcoming U.S. economic releases and Fed communications for further clues on the central bank's path. Key events to watch include:
- The Federal Reserve's Beige Book on Wednesday
- The ADP employment report and durable goods orders
- A scheduled appearance by Fed Governor Christopher Waller on Thursday
Analysts at ING suggest that Waller is likely to reinforce the case for further rate hikes ahead of the next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on September 16. The firm also noted that "it is not clear that even a soft set of labour data will stop the Fed hiking."
