Background

The British pound fell against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday, joining a retreat in the euro, as investors priced in a more aggressive interest rate outlook from the U.S. Federal Reserve. The move reflects broad-based dollar strength rather than any UK-specific economic developments.

As of 03:52 ET (07:52 GMT), the GBP/USD currency pair was down 0.04% at 1.3509, while the EUR/USD pair had dropped 0.13% to 1.1577, according to data cited by Investing.com.

Hawkish Fed Dominates Sentiment

The primary driver for the dollar's ascent is a market shift following hawkish remarks last week from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh. According to analysts at ING, this has moved the market's baseline expectation toward a potential interest rate hike at the Fed's September 16 meeting, spurred by an economy seen as "reasonably strong" and inflation not falling quickly enough.

"We think the cyclical Fed story can trump the dollar bearish debasement theme," wrote Chris Turner, Global Head of Markets at ING. He noted that even potentially weak U.S. labor market data, such as Wednesday's ADP employment report, may not be enough to deter the central bank from hiking.

Investors are now looking ahead to the Fed's Beige Book release later on Wednesday and a discussion with Fed Governor Christopher Waller on Thursday for further signals. ING expects Waller to reinforce the case for a rate increase.

Broad Market Impact

The pound's decline on Wednesday was attributed entirely to the repricing of Fed policy, with no mention of Bank of England policy or UK data as contributing factors in ING's analysis. The euro is facing similar pressure, compounded by headwinds from rising energy prices.

ING's analysts suggested the dollar index (DXY) could continue to rise toward the 100.10/20 area. The hawkish Fed outlook is also weighing on other assets, including the Swiss franc, gold, and bitcoin. The main risk to this bullish dollar view, according to ING, would be a significant sell-off in long-end U.S. Treasury yields.
