Pound Sterling Rises on Surprise UK Retail Sales and Weaker US Dollar

Summary
The British pound strengthened on Friday, supported by an unexpected rise in August retail sales and a pullback in the U.S. dollar as oil prices eased from recent highs.
The British pound gained against the U.S. dollar on Friday, lifted by surprisingly strong domestic retail sales data and a broader softening of the greenback. As of 4:18 AM ET, the GBP/USD currency pair traded 0.11% higher at $1.3373.
Surprise Rebound in UK Consumer Spending
Data released by the UK's Office for National Statistics showed that retail sales volumes unexpectedly rose by 0.5% in August, defying market expectations for a 0.2% decline. The figure marks a significant turnaround from July's unrevised 0.5% drop.
The increase was driven by a recovery at department stores, which had been affected by supply issues, and a rebound for online retailers following a lull in July. Year-over-year, retail sales volumes were up 2.4%. However, fuel sales volumes declined as retailers noted that consumers were reacting to higher prices by only partially filling their tanks.
Dollar Eases as Oil Prices Retreat
While the UK data provided a tailwind for sterling, analysts suggest the currency's gains were primarily driven by a pullback in the U.S. dollar. The dollar's recent rally, spurred by hawkish signals from the Federal Reserve, lost some momentum as oil prices eased.
Ad"The pullback in oil prices has curbed the dollar’s upside momentum after the Fed meeting," said Francesco Pesole, a foreign exchange strategist at ING, in a note. ING's analysis suggests the pound's move was more influenced by the dollar's performance than a direct re-pricing based on the retail figures.
Market Outlook and Central Bank Policy
The Federal Reserve's hawkish stance from its Wednesday meeting continues to underpin the dollar, with markets pricing in the potential for another interest rate hike in October. Investors will be closely watching upcoming speeches from Fed officials for further policy clues.
Meanwhile, several European Central Bank policymakers have also struck a hawkish tone this week, with ECB President Christine Lagarde scheduled to speak later on Friday. However, ING noted that there is limited scope for new signals, with the euro's immediate downside risk at the $1.140 level against the dollar.
