Pound Slips as Dollar Holds Firm Ahead of U.S. Payrolls Report

The British pound traded slightly lower against a steady U.S. dollar on Thursday, as investors refrained from making significant bets ahead of the crucial U.S. non-farm payrolls report. As of 07:00 ET, the GBP/USD currency pair was down 0.04% to 1.3463.
Dollar Awaits Key Jobs Data
Foreign exchange markets remained in a holding pattern, with the dollar's stability largely attributed to anticipation of Friday's U.S. employment figures. According to Francesco Pesole, an FX Strategist at ING, a "wait-and-see stance may keep volatility contained and the dollar broadly range-bound" until the data is released.
Recent economic indicators have provided a mixed picture of the U.S. labor market. While the ADP private payrolls report came in soft at 44,000, the ISM services index beat expectations at 54.1. However, the employment sub-index of that same report fell to 47.5, suggesting potential weakness in the official government numbers.
Contrasting Central Bank Signals
The dollar's resilience has been supported by recent hawkish-leaning commentary from Federal Reserve officials, including Mary Daly, Lisa Cook, and Neel Kashkari. Markets continue to price in limited Fed easing, with 14-17 basis points of cuts anticipated for September and 30-35 basis points by December, according to the source.
AdIn contrast, sterling's recent performance has been less influenced by domestic policy. The Bank of England left interest rates unchanged at its last meeting, with Governor Andrew Bailey downplaying the immediate need for further monetary tightening. The pound's support above the $1.345 level has been attributed more to broader geopolitical risk sentiment than to UK-specific fundamentals.
Market Outlook
The near-term direction for both the pound and the euro hinges almost entirely on the U.S. payrolls data. A weaker-than-expected jobs report could reignite a dollar selloff, while a strong number would likely reinforce the Fed's hawkish stance and send the greenback higher.
Meanwhile, the euro held near a seven-week high against the dollar, with the EUR/USD pair testing resistance around the 1.1550-1.1560 area. Analysts at ING noted that a significant break higher would likely require a disappointing U.S. data print on Friday.
