Pound Edges Higher as Dollar Rally Pauses Ahead of US CPI Report

Summary
The British pound gained against the U.S. dollar as a recent greenback rally stalled, with currency traders awaiting the release of crucial U.S. inflation data that could influence Federal Reserve policy.
The British pound edged higher against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, as a recent rally in the greenback paused ahead of a widely anticipated U.S. inflation report. The data is expected to provide fresh clues on the Federal Reserve's path for interest rates.
Market Awaits Inflation Cues
The GBP/USD currency pair rose 0.20% to 1.3375 in morning trade, according to Investing.com data. The move was part of a broader, albeit modest, retreat for the dollar, with the euro also gaining ground.
Investors are focused on the upcoming U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) for June. While headline inflation is forecast to ease month-on-month due to lower energy prices, analysts noted that a core reading of 0.2% would do little to deter the Federal Reserve from its hawkish stance. Fed Governor Christopher Waller warned on Monday that another rate hike may be necessary if core inflation remains elevated.
Markets are currently pricing in approximately a 50% probability of a rate hike at the July Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, with a total of 43 basis points of tightening priced in by the end of the year.
Geopolitical Tensions Underpin Dollar
AdThe dollar's recent strength has been supported by rising geopolitical tensions after the U.S. reimposed a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, which helped push Brent crude oil prices to $84 a barrel. This has increased demand for the safe-haven greenback.
"Short-term risks remain on the upside for the dollar," said Francesco Pesole, an FX strategist at ING, in a research note. However, Pesole observed that both oil and the dollar "are showing reluctance to fully price back in another supply shock."
Sterling Lacks Domestic Drivers
Tuesday's gains for the pound were driven by the broad-based dollar movements rather than any UK-specific catalysts. British economic data and political developments played a minimal role in the session's trading.
With no significant UK economic releases or comments from Bank of England officials, sterling's performance was largely dictated by the dynamics of the U.S. dollar and overall market risk sentiment.
